Let’s Look-My Wellness Routine

Hey Hey Hey!

It’s WEDNESDAY and that means another week of Let’s Look with Shay. Each month we take a little peek at how we do something and share in hopes it’ll help someone else. We might look like we have it all together but trust me when I say that we can ALL learn something from each other. That’s the big hope in these posts.

To recap our year so far…

January-We covered our Low Level Goals. These are the goals that will make us feel productive but aren’t anything too difficult. I’m happy to report one item has already been crossed off my list!

February-We shared how we Work on our Marriage.

March-We discussed how we Reset for the Week.

April-We looked at Maintaining Friendships.

Today, we’re looking at our WELLNESS ROUTINES!

My goodness! If you’re like me, there is SO MUCH INFORMATION coming at me at all times I get overwhelmed when it comes to my own health and wellness.

Did I walk enough steps today?

Did I drink enough water?

Did I eat enough protein?

Did I strength train?

Did I get enough fiber?

Did I get enough sleep?

Did I lift heavy enough?

Did I…

Did I…

Did I…

Not only are those the things I’m asking myself but my social media does me real dirty quite often. Instagram shows me a TON of fitness influencers who are posing in THE MOST flattering of ways. Not only that but they’re making it all sound so darn easy!

I can get REALLY overwhelmed with all things health and wellness. Can you tell?

Let me start this by telling you I’m no fitness expert, but I’m going to share a little of what I’ve done in the past….

I’ve been pretty active my whole life. I played sports in high school almost year round. I worked out in college…very sporadically-but it counts. When Tab and I got married I made myself become a runner because we didn’t want to splurge on the gym membership. After kids I did splurge on the gym membership so I could get the childcare. I’ve done Peloton workouts, fitness classes at the gym, yoga, pilates, worked out with a trainer and have used multiple apps throughout the years to find what I enjoy the most.

Needless to say I’ve had many different wellness routines over the years. I’m sure I’ll change it again in the next couple years but for now, this is what I do…

*I lift weights four days a week…shoulders/chest, legs, biceps/triceps, and full body.

*I also shoot for one day a week of a short HIT workout or sprints. This is quick and under 30 minutes, gets me super sweaty and feeling REALLY accomplished.

*I try to get in roughly an hour walk daily. I prefer to walk the dog and walk to/from the gym. That little combination gets me right around an hour which is prime for me. Sometimes that just doesn’t work with my schedule and I only have fifteen minutes to get extra steps in. I just do my best.

*I often have to quiet the noise. Like I said, we are hit from a wide variety of different avenues with all things about how women look, what we should be doing, what we should look like, what we should eat, what we should feed our families, etc. It can be WAY TOO MUCH! When I get that feeling of overwhelm when it comes to this, I take a social media break or I go through my feed and unfollow anyone who’s pushing that narrative. I follow a few fitness influencers who are the opposite, they’re very encouraging and they keep it real when it comes to posting great pics of them but also the pics where they have saggy skin and a roll or two.

*I make healthy choices 80% of the time. I’ve spent weeks eating REALLY healthy {and it paid off} but I also enjoy certain foods. I try to make healthy choices most of the time so when I want to splurge I do. {And then I don’t have guilt. If I’m gonna enjoy that Mexican food out, then I enjoy it and move on.}

*I eat what my family eats. I remember watching Jon & Kate Plus 8. Do you guys remember that show?! Every evening Kate would make the family something for dinner but she’d eat a salad. What message was she sending her daughters?! Surely she was cooking healthy enough food she could eat it?! For instance, last night I made chicken parmesan in the slow cooker, pasta, green beans, roasted tomatoes, and salad. I had some of everything but my biggest portions were the green beans and tomatoes. I just don’t want my girls thinking there’s something wrong with mom having carbs at dinner so I eat some.

*I give myself grace. I do my very best with it all, but sometimes life happens, sometimes my schedule is crazy busy, sometimes I only have time for a fast food dinner, etc. I give myself grace and remind myself I’m doing my very best.

*I spend time with Jesus. I’m adding that in this wellness list because sometimes I can completely lose focus of my priorities. But that time with Jesus reminds me what should come first. Do I need to stress out because I missed my walk? No. Do I need to skip hanging with the family because I wasn’t able to lift weights today? No. My prayer time and time in the Word helps reset my heart on the things that matter most.

What about YOU?! Do you have something in your wellness routine you love? I’d love for you to share! I absolutely LOVE doing pilates but over the last couple months {remember it was one of my goals for 2025?} I’ve realized I just can’t fit it in my schedule this year. It’s not my time to enjoy pilates. Maybe next year?!

Thank you so much for popping in today! Next month we’re sharing our TRAVEL BUCKET LISTS! That should be FUN!

XO

Great post! Are you just down to blogging 2 days a week now?

Hey Madi! I’m not sure. Mondays are always hard because I have to blog over the weekend to get it ready for Monday and I usually choose family over blogging. It’s easier in the fall when Tab’s gone.

My goodness I remember Jon and Kate + 8! There have been a couple of clips from them floating around social lately. Have you seen the one where she asks him to stop breathing so loud? It’s making a joke about perimenopause and it’s pretty funny, but in that moment you also see how much she really dislikes him so it’s also kind of sad. That show was wheels off!

I so appreciate the balance your share. And how blessed your daughters are that you consider what they see you eat. They are watching and your such a considerate and loving Mom.
