Fantasy Football

Hey There, Friends!

Here we go with our first official week of school! You know what else is happening other than kids going back to school? FOOTBALL SEASON!

Training camps have begun, NFL pre-season games are happening, and we’re seeing less and less of that husband of mine. August is always the craziest month with training camps and games for him!

But it means FANTASY FOOTBALL is right around the corner! Bowen and I started playing in a mom/son fantasy football league two years ago. Who even knew how into the whole thing we’d get? I wasn’t prepared! We had no clue what we were doing but the two of us participated in the draft, watched our players every week and ended that first season the champs! {Keep in mind we play for nothing but bragging rights.}.

Last year we played in that same league again and then we had a Mix and Match Travel Agency draft that was fun too!

I’m saying all that to say that I’m by far from an expert on the subject, but a reader asked me about how to even get started with a Fantasy Football League for moms and sons so I thought I’d share my rookie thoughts…

*Our group uses the ESPN Fantasy Football League. You can login online and even download the app as well.

*One mom needs to be the “League Creator” to get the party started. She’ll need email addresses in order to invite people to the league.

*Set a date for the draft. I think you want to do it as close to the end of the pre-season as possible {last games are August 25th}, just in case any key players get hurt. But it’s not the end of the world if you draft earlier.

*You can participate in a “mock draft” just so you understand how it’ll look on draft night. This is an option on that website.

*You don’t have to know ANYTHING about football or sports to participate. During the draft, the system will pick kind of the next best player available for you if you’re not choosing on draft night. So, don’t let your knowledge or lack of knowledge stop you!

*Our draft is set in a snake draft so if you have ten players, it’ll randomly select an order and you’ll get to draft 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10. Then the order goes in reverse so 10 chooses again, 9, 8, 7, etc.

*The draft is super easy. Ours typically takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. Teams are set! And you’re ready to go for week one.

*It’s not a big commitment. You’ll want to check weekly to see if you have any players injured or that have a bye that week. If so, just sub in a player off your bench. That really probably takes us ten minutes each week. But just know if you forget to do that, it’s no problem.

*And that’s it!

I never dreamed how much football knowledge I’d snag from checking Fantasy Football points. I kind of went ALL IN the first season and even listened to weekly podcasts that recapped NFL games. I wanted to hear which players were really performing and which weren’t. That is totally unnecessary! I’m accidentally showing a bit of my competitiveness here with that little tidbit. ;). My football and player knowledge grew just from getting more familiar with the teams. But the main reason I loved it is it gave Bowen and I something to do each week that was just for us! Moms of boys will understand when I tell you it can be hard finding things we can bond over and fantasy football happens to be that for the two of us. WHO KNEW?!

So here’s my little PSA if you’re even remotely considering this with your son {or even your daughter}, DO IT!

This year Bowen and I are hosting a draft night for the moms/sons in our league and I snagged a few extra goodies just to make it more festive…

Mini Foam Fingers

Grass Table Runner

Mini Footballs

Foam Finger

Goal Centerpiece

Okay, ladies! I hope that helps someone a bit if you’ve been considering doing this for your people. Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Best of luck this Fantasy season!
