Moving with Littles

Andrea and I are blogging on MOVING with LITTLES today.  Andrea and her crew just recently moved so she’s in the middle of that fun right now.  (That was a little sarcastic.  Could you tell?  Moving isn’t my kind of fun.)  My family and I have moved a couple times over the last few years.  We thought it might be helpful to some if we shared positive things we did while moving with littles (and I’ll probably share some not-so-great-things too).

Tab and I had our first move when our kids were these ages-Ebby Lee-4, Nixon-3, and Bowen-7 months.  The market here was crazy (and still is) for selling homes, but the buying part was a little more difficult.  We were living in a McKinney address/Frisco school zone and wanted to move to all McKinney before Ebby Lee started school.  Houses were flying off the market.  We’d go check out a house and it’d be sold before we walked through the entire thing!

We finally found this gem.  (We called it our “pink house”.)  It needed some updating, but after some TLC, it was the perfect home for us.  During this first move, we got a U-Haul and borrowed a few trucks and did all the moving ourselves. We were only moving a couples miles down the street, so it’d be easy, right?

We made trip after trip after trip from one house to the other.  That moment when you remember your ATTIC is full of stuff.  Ugh!  That was the worst!  This move was also tricky because we were doing all the floors in the new house, painting, and a bit of a kitchen rennovation.  We had three weeks where we couldn’t be in the new house but were out of the old house.  We stayed at Marla’s house right down the street, which was fabulous.  But-it meant we had things in storage, at Marla’s house, and in the new house.

When we finally were able to move in, our lives shut down a bit.  We spent our days unpacking until we were somewhat settled.  I regret shutting things down like I did.

Because of the chaos of the remodeling, we were only able to put stuff in the new house in just a couple rooms.  So the piles in those rooms were OVERWHELMING.

I was thankful for a laid back baby Bowen.  That kid learned to sleep in a pack-in-play ANYWHERE!

Then only two years later I found myself doing this!  We were moving again!

We don’t regret that move in the slightest but we had really needed another bedroom and because of the market we pounced on the pink house instead of waiting around.  It was the perfect house at the time.  We loved the neighborhood.  But when Bowen started getting bigger, it got a little tougher.  So just last year, we decided we were ready to start looking for a house with a little more space.

This time around our kids were a little older (which majorly helped)…Ebby Lee-6, Nixon-5, and Bowen 2.

Also the second time around we hired movers.  Even though we were moving just a couples miles down the street we knew we were ready to hand it off to professionals.

And we’re so glad we did.  #bestdecisionever

Tab and I would have never pulled off moving this bed.  My cousin made these super sturdy bunk beds for Nixon’s room and we couldn’t get the bed apart to move it.  (Since then the bed has been taken apart and put back together in Bowen’s room.)  So the movers just hauled it off the back balcony.

As soon as we moved in to this house we did some work as well but we weren’t doing as much…not ALL the floors.  We were able to have the movers put everything that belonged upstairs in the right room upstairs.  That helped a TON!

This time around I balanced our lives at home a lot better.  We still enjoyed our summer by spending days by the pool but I’d schedule us to unpack a couple days a week as well.  There was balance so no one was going crazy.  Me included!  🙂

Here a few of my tips…
*No matter if you have movers or you’re doing it yourself-when you’re unloading things at the new house if you know a box is for your son’s room then carry it to your son’s room.  Don’t just make a pile in the garage to unpack later.  That gets too overwhelming.

*Find balance…you need to unpack to keep yourself sane, but don’t shut down your entire life to unpack.

*If a friend offers to help, take her up on it!  I promise you-she really means it.  We all know how much more you could get done if your kids are at a friend’s house for a couple hours.  Let her help!

*Give your kids some jobs.  My kids are old enough now to help!  Let your kids get involved by unpacking a box or putting something away.

*Relax…the boxes will all be unpacked one day.  Even though it feels like it’ll never happen, it will.  🙂

If you have some other helpful hints about moving, PLEASE share!!  I hope we helped someone today!  Have a great Thursday!  XOXO

We just moved (this weekend!) and I totally agree that hiring movers is the best money spent! I will gladly wait a few weeks (or months…) to buy some furniture pieces I want, but there was no way I was going to move without the pros.

I think when you're moving close, you fool yourself into thinking it's not a big deal, AND THAT IS 100% INCORRECT. I cried when I remembered one linen closet that we hadn't packed, I can't imagine remembering the attic!!!!

Moving is just hard and exhausting and it doesn't always bring out the best in people. Lol. For obvious reasons. Your tips are great! Definitley hiring movers is a must!!!! Mine and Tylers marriage might have been in serious jeopardy if we did not do that. Lol!!!

The best packing tip I have is for the closets! I've found in my 9 moves that the best way to haul clothing on hangers is to lay a large fitted sheet on the ground and lay the clothes in there, tie up the opposite corners and roll out!

Ekk!! I still have a few boxes in the garage from our move a year ago. Clearly they should just be thrown out!! Right?? Good tips!! Moving is hard work.

Moving that bed looks a little scary! I'm glad you hired professionals for that job. Sometimes it is easier to just get out of the way and let the professionals take care of everything. Especially when you have small children, it can reduce some of the stress associated with moving. However, you are definitely right, moving is never really fun!
