First, let me say that I intended to take pictures all day of Bowen and do this fun “Day in the life of Bowen” post. Oh my goodness!! I kept forgetting. It’s 8:40 p.m. on Wednesday night and I’ve only taken 3 pictures of him. I kept forgetting the camera and my phone died ALL day long. I couldn’t keep it charged. Excuses, excuses, excuses!! Clearly, I’ll try that again on another day.
Yesterday I was reading my friend, Erin’s, blog. She is so funny. She did this post all about the trends she was late for. I was laughing out loud when I read it. Laughing because I know her and could imagine what she was saying, but other times because I was SO far behind on that trend too!! I thought it would be funny to document a few trends I was a little late to the party for…if you know what I’m saying.
Here it goes…
Abercrombie & Fitch-(circa 1999) To quote Erin, “I was so far behind on this trend that I missed it altogether”. I completely agree!! I’m sure my book club girls are cracking up right now. *Sidenote…we were discussing this at our book club last night. I’m from a SUPER small country town in Missouri. We dressed cute. We wore “popular” clothes. But…I’m discovering that most of it was “popular”…only to my little area. Which is great until I’m telling my friends who grew up in Dallas about what I wore growing up! ha! Just keep reading…you’ll understand* Wait for it…I’d NEVER even heard of Abercrombie & Fitch until the LFO song, “Summer Girls” came out. Are you shocked?? ha ha ha! It’s the truth.
Gaucho Pants-(circa 2002-I’m really not sure if they were super in style and when) I had one pair of these pants. I distinctly remember getting the pants and I even remember the year…2005. See, I’m pretty sure I was already late. I felt like I got them and the next day they weren’t cool anymore. Which is SO sad, because as unflattering as they were on EVERYONE they were as equally as comfortable on everyone. Who didn’t feel comfy in a pair of gauchos?? And…a special thanks to my cousin, Lindsey. She is the one who politely pointed out to me that gauchos were not “in” style anymore. Thank you, Linz!!
Fitness-(circa 2001) I’m saying 2001 because I graduated high school that year and went to college. They call it the “Freshman Fifteen” for a reason right? In high school, I played volleyball and cheered so I didn’t have to really be concerned with extra physical activity on top of all that I was involved in. In college, I SHOULD have been concerned with exercising and fitness, but I was NOT. Now, I happily go to the gym 3 days a week. I enjoy working out (most of the time). I just wish I could go back and tell the college freshman Erika to start a little sooner. 🙂
Costume Jewelry-(circa 2001) I was airing too much at book club last night apparently! But…we also talked about this one. In high school, people didn’t wear a lot of cute costume jewelry. I’m not even going to describe the jewelry we wore and thought was cute. You can imagine. 🙂 I remember going to my college orientation. I was a HOT MESS. I can’t go into the whole look I was wearing, but know this…I was wearing white tube socks. LOL!! (Stop right there…were those EVER cool in your town? Sheaffer…I can’t wait to hear your response to this!) I can’t believe I just shared that with you guys!! I remember thinking that I looked SO cute, but when I showed up there were girls in my group that really did look so cute. Oh my! I remember seeing this cute costume jewelry and thinking, “whoa, you have a lot to learn!!”. Ha ha!!
I-Phone-(circa 2010) To be honest, I didn’t understand that I NEEDED the internet with me whenever and wherever I went. I remember thinking that I wouldn’t really USE it that much. Oh, how I was wrong! I’m pretty sure I was the last one of my friends to get one. Tab surprised me with an I-Phone in November 2011. It was so sweet of him! But…I’ve never looked back! I can’t imagine my life without it. Now don’t get me wrong, I know I could actually live without it, but it makes my life SO much easier.
Hope you enjoyed reliving these trends I was behind on!! Please Please Please leave me a comment and let me know what trends you were behind on!!
Happy Thursday!!
You are so funny! Seriously, this was funny!
In college, I missed the whole "stay up late, go to frat parties and have fun" trend and went straight to working until 10:30 pm every night after spending all day at school. Is it too late for me to go to frat parties? I feel like that was an important trend that I missed! Do you think they'll let a 32 year old mother of 2.5 in? Do you think Andrew will care? That's the trend I missed…poor me!
SUCH A FUNNY POST ERIKA! Okay, so I KNOW Shay would say that we weren't close enough to the same ages to enjoy the same trends, and she might be right. I NEVER owned a pair of gouchos. Never. And I did rock tube socks at one point, but I was in the 5th grade. TOTALLY appropriate for 5th grade, not so much for freshman orientation. So sad that I missed all of our stories! Dang kid turning 5 and making me miss girl time. 🙂
Erika! This is so funny! The gaucho pants made me LOL, because I still wear mine as PJs–they were just so darn comfortable I couldn't let them go! 😉
Love reading all the blogs you Texas gals write!!! I was super late on the iPhone trends, as in it was just last year (2012) when I purchased my first iPhone, which is now considered the ancient iPhone 4, no 4s…just a 4. Haha!! Mom probs!
This post was hysterical! I found your blog from Pinterest Told Me To this morning! I never comment on blogs, but I had to let you know that I wore tube socks when I started college in 99! I'm from a small town in Norrh LA and I went to college at LSU. All the girls from south LA wore ankle socks- I thought they were the ones who looked bad! 🙂 I met my husband the first week I was at LSU (while I was wearing the tube socks!!) and he still makes fun of me for that! I thought they were so cute!
I am with you on the A & F and discovering it in the song. RIP Rich! (the lead singer in that group) I was at cheer camp in HS the summer it came out. I'm from a very small town in NE and I understand….all of this!

I have been reading for a while…just wanted to drop by and say HI (we are from the same circle here in Missouri)!
I definitely wore white tube socks all through high school. They were a "popular" item in my town as well! I distinctly remember my mom being appalled that I wanted to buy some, let alone wear them in public!
Totally rocked the gauchos. In fact, I had a pair when I got pregnant w/ my first child (which was in 07). And I agree, I thought I didn't need an iPhone…. until I got one. Now, I'll never be able to live without one!
Love this post! Stopping by from Pinterest Told me to 🙂 While I am a few years older than you, I can relate to a few of these. I had no clue about A&F! Like you, I heard about it in the LFO song first 🙂 I never had gouchos until they were deemed "uncool", but mine are just worn at bedtime 🙂 I was super late to join the "flats" trend! I just love my flip flops and gym shoes..guess that is the 90's girl in me still 🙂
Lol! I can relate to ALL of this stuff! Heck, a Polo shirt was considered dressed up! I'm from a small MO. town too- where are you from? I graduated from Sheldon with only 13 kids in my class and one of those was a foreign exchange student.
Ok since I read your blog and creepily know lots about you…I will add that I am from a small town too!! I graduated with 16 kids. And the closest mall was 1 1/2 hours away. "We" as a town missed lots of trends. I totally get you!!
Totally rocked the tube socks 🙂
Hi Erika, I found your blog from Shay's blog and I look forward to reading it everyday!! This post was great! Have a great weekend!
Xoxo
Rachel
Hahaha! Loved this! I missed the gaucho pants too but for some reason they totally make me think of Stephanie (Sulton) Richardson! Glad I could inspire you a little on this topic. We'll have to write again in another 5 years with all the other trends we missed! 🙂
I'm so glad you ladies were behind on some trends too!!!
I love this! Too funny. I am ashamed to say I was late to the fashion trend of skinny jeans. I never thought I could wear them! I hung on to those flare jeans a little too long 🙂 haha.
