Dry Shampoo Challenge-Round One

Hey Hey!

Happy Monday!

WAHOO!  I’m starting this week off WAY better than how I felt ending last week!  I can already tell it’s gonna be a good one.  🙂

The time has FINALLY come for me to start reviewing DRY SHAMPOOS!  I asked for your favorites almost a year ago and I’ve gotta be honest…at the moment, I was expecting to get maybe fifteen suggestions to try.  YOU GUYS DELIVERED!  And I think I had no less than fifty suggestions.  I got a little overwhelmed, ordered a ton of dry shampoo, and really had no clue where to even begin.  Have no fear…now I have a game plan!

Because there were so many suggestions, I’m splitting it up into several different rounds.  After trying out all the suggestions, then I’ll have a “dry shampoo off” between my favorites.  The goal is to finish the challenge by summer {or at the latest} or fall.  So grab your cup of coffee, sit back, get comfy, and be ready to talk ALL THINGS HAIR!

This is the Line-Up for Round One of the Dry Shampoo Challenge…

Okay, so here are a few random thoughts-
*Everyone’s hair is different so my favorite definitely might not be yours.  These are just my opinions.
*I have a huge list of suggestions and the second round of dry shampoos I’m testing are already on their way BUT if you have one you definitely want me to try, please share it in the comments.  I don’t want to miss ANY during this challenge!
*While some are faves and others aren’t, I used and will continue to use each and every bottle unless I absolutely hate the dry shampoo.  I tend to use my favorites on “hair down” days and my non-favorites are used on “ponytail” days.
*While this is pricey, this is THE BEST detox shampoo for getting rid of any product build-up.  I’ve had my jar of this shampoo for almost two years and I still have about 1/4 of the product left.  I use this as my shampoo once a week or every other week to rid my hair of all that ick that builds up especially at the scalp.
*My hair dresser likes to say my hair is “fine” but I have a LOT of fine hair.  We joke about her arms looking good because of how long it takes to blow dry my hair.
*I’ve been getting my hair colored since I was a junior in high school.  It just started out as a few highlights.
*Because of ALL the coloring, my hair tends to get very dry.  I try to wash it just twice a week and am the biggest DRY SHAMPOO fan the other five days.
*Right now, I use this shampoo and conditioner.  I just bought this Revlon blow dryer everyone is talking about and YOU GUYS!!!  The hype is REAL!  It left my hair looking so smooth!  I seriously cannot believe the price!  I use this, this, or this to protect my hair before using my curling iron.  If I could go back and tell my fifth grade self that one day you’ll actually ADD oil to your hair, I’m certain I wouldn’t believe it.

Price:  This one is definitely on the pricey side.  However, I have seen Living Proof website offer buy one, get one free deals.  If you snag a deal like that, then the price isn’t so bad.

Smell:  GREAT!  HUGE fan of this smell!

Cleanliness:  This dry shampoo promises to actually clean the hair and elminiate oil, sweat, and odor.  I feel like it did JUST that!

Left My Hair:  Looking much better…this dry shampoo does a great job of not producing build-up.  I noticed this one needed a little time to work.  I found that applying this, doing my make-up, and then going back to finish my hair really allowed this dry shampoo to zap the oil and clean my hair.

Residue:  I didn’t notice anything.

Rating:  4.5/5
This dry shampoo has a following and I see why-I thought it was offering up some big promises but it seemed to deliver on them as well!  I gave it a 4.5 because of the price!

Price:  It’s on the high end ringing in at $27 a bottle.

Smell:  I was a fan of the smell.

Cleanliness:  I’m not sure exactly how the charcoal is supposed to make this dry shampoo better, but I didn’t notice the charcoal’s magical powers.  I didn’t notice my oily hair looking much better.

Left My Hair:  Looking pretty much the same as before I sprayed it.  🙁

Residue:  I didn’t notice any.

Rating:  2/5
This was not my favorite-ESPECIALLY considering the price.  For that price, there should be NO DOUBTS about this dry shampoo working.

Price:  On the high end as well with a normal bottle costing $26.

Smell:  I LOVE the smell of all Moroccanoil products and this one did not disappoint.

Cleanliness:  I think it worked!  My hair looked cleaner after spraying and any extra oil disappeared.

Left My Hair:  Noticeably looking better than before using.

Residue:  I didn’t see any but I did use the “Light Tones”.  Lots of you with dark hair mentioned dry shampooing showing up in your hair.  This brand does offer both a light and dark option.

Rating:  4.5/5
To be honest, I don’t know the difference between this one and the Living Proof…I felt like they were equally GREAT CHOICES!

Price:  GREAT!  Hard to beat at under $5.00 for this big can.

Smell:  It was just “okay”, in my book.

Cleanliness:  I didn’t really notice a big difference before or after using this dry shampoo.

Left My Hair:  Looking a tad better than before I used it?  But no significant changes.

Residue:  I didn’t see anything.

Rating:  2/5
I scored it this way mostly because of the price AND the no residue.  However, I wouldn’t recommend this dry shampoo at all!  Lots of others are WAY better!

Price:  This one is super comparable to those other more high end options.

Smell:  It smells just like everything Dry Bar…if you’re a fan, you’ll love the smell.  I, for one, am!

Cleanliness:  I think this one showed a difference in the cleanliness of my hair as well.

Left My Hair:  This one felt thicker than some of the others but it still did leave my hair feeling cleaner.

Residue:  Again, the spray felt “thicker” than some of the other options.

Rating:  4.5/5
I’m a fan of this one!

Price:  GREAT price!  Under $4 for a big can!

Smell:  The smell is just “eh”.

Cleanliness:  I didn’t notice much of a difference.  This one was definitely a “ponytail only” kind of dry shampoo.

Left My Hair:  Feeling pretty much the same.

Residue:  I couldn’t see anything…this spray felt very thin.

Rating:  1.5/5
My least favorite dry shampoo from round one.

Price:  The most pricey of the round number one….$29.

Smell:  Absolutely AMAZING!

Cleanliness:  Definitely worked on leaving my hair looking fresh and clean.

Left My Hair:  Looking CLEAN!

Residue:  I didn’t see anything.

Rating:  4.6/5
I’d choose this one as my favorite from Round One!

I really don’t think you could go wrong with any of those dry shampoos snagging a 4.5 rating or above.  They’re all super similar in how clean they leave your hair, but I did prefer the Bumble and Bumble Tres Invisible Dry Shampoo.

Don’t worry though-lots of other dry shampoo options are headed your way soon in Round Two of our challenge!  I have a wide variety in price coming up!

Remember-if you have any recommendations you’d like me to include, please send them my way!  My plan is to have several rounds and then I’ll do a big recap of the top award winners!

Happy Monday, Everyone!

Hope you have a great HAIR day!

Oh gosh I wish I could only wash my hair twice a week! Like you, I have a lot of fine hair, but if I’m going out of the house to actually see people, I have to wash my hair. It’s a huge greasy mess every morning. I work from home two days a week and then don’t wash on Sunday so unless there are special plans, I wash four days a week. I use Living Proof dry shampoo but it doesn’t work. Nothing seems to with my hair!

Oh my goodness, thank you so much for doing this! My hair gets super dry also and I don't want to wash it more than necessary–but I also don't want to have dirty post-workout hair either! Trying some of these out stat!

Have you thought of making your own? I make a huge batch and it lasts forever. I choose an essential oil to give it a fragrance. Works amazingly!

Have you thought of making your own? I make a huge batch of it and then pick an essential oil to use as a fragrance. Most aerosols and dry shampoos have very toxic ingredients known to be cancer causing. I was all about dry shampoo and then I made my own and it was a game changer!

I love the dry bar dry shampoo, they do have a brunette one too. Although I feel like my hands end up having some brown residue when i try to work it through. But I probably should use a brush and wait 10 minutes or so before brushing/working it into my hair.

Im intrigued by the bumble and bumble!

I was so excited to see that you started your dry shampoo testing, and I am really excited to see who goes head to head at the end!

So much helpful information here! I can’t wait to try out a couple of these to see what works with my hair! Right now I actually take some baby powder and run that through my hair and it works well as a dry shampoo!

I have tons of fine hair as well! I love dry shampoo and agree, the high end dry shampoos always seem to work best for me. I think it's mainly the texture of my hair!

have you tried using them in your hair the night before? My sis is a cosmetologist and she recommended that and it works so well! I wake up and my hair has volume and isn't oily at all…..and there is no waiting for the dry shampoo to dry.

I can't seem to quit my Batiste for Blondes! Cheap and it works great BUT I did just try the Klorane that Shay told me about at the basketball game and I am loving it! Just wish it wasn't so expensive because I feel like half the bottle is already gone! haha I also tried Living Proof but the smell gave me a headache. My hairspray gives me a headache too. Maybe I'm just extra sensitive.

Love this little review!!! Gotta try your #1!

So true that not everything will work for everyone! I have thick, naturally colored blonde hair and I love the Not Your Mother's brand! Living Proof was just okay for me, but I've not tried any of the others you mentioned. I also love Batiste!

I, also, was a big fan of dry shampoo until about a year ago when my hair stylist asked me if I had ever read the ingredients on a bottle… did you know most dry shampoo has butane or propane as one of the top ingredients! EK! I had no idea and quite frankly that scared me enough to stop using any that had it! I wasn't interested in catching on fire or burning my hair! Unfortunately, I am still searching for a great dry shampoo without those ingredients, I have one I am using now that is just ok! Maybe the others you are planning to test won't have butane or propane!

I have never left a comment before but I feel it’s my civic duty to do so concerning this very important topic. I LOOVE Amika’s perk up dry shampoo. Also- I was listening to a podcast a few weeks ago (4 things with Amy Brown) and she said to use dry shampoo AT NIGHT before you go to bed and then in the morning it has soaked up all the oils and has no residue or anything. I used it and omg is it amazing. It totally worked for my hair, which sometimes tends to be more oily. So try the dry shampoo, and then try spraying it in at night. It will change your life. 😉
