Confessions of a First Time Dog Mom

I must preface this with I was a COMPLETE rookie when it came to all things dog owning. We had dogs growing up but they were country dogs that lived outside so VERY different than an inside dog in the suburbs.

Here are a few of my confessions from my first year and a half of “Dog Mom” life…

*We got Champ when he was about 12 weeks old. He stuck around for “training” {I’m using that word VERY loosely} so we could surprise our kids at Christmas. Keep in mind-we had NEVER had a dog inside our home so to us he was pretty rambunctious. {My neighbors still don’t agree.}. He was full of energy and always moving. One day he was totally unlike himself…pretty lethargic, sleeping lots, not following me from room to room, etc. I did what all new dog moms would do…I PANICKED! I called the vet and took him in immediately. hahahaha! What a rookie! He had no other symptoms other than he was NOT acting like himself but you better believe the outing to the vet perked him right up. #lessonlearned. Dogs can have blah days too. Now I know!

*Remember I’d never had an inside dog before…so every time I touched or petted Champ I immediately went to the sink to wash my hands. EVERY SINGLE TIME. We got him in December and my hands were so dry they were bleeding. We went to dinner with friends just a few days after Christas and were talking about how it was going. I showed the girls my hands and when I explained how all the washing was drying my hands out, they couldn’t stop laughing. Apparently you don’t have to wash your hands after EVERY interaction with your new puppy. I do, in fact wash my hands often, but not every time I touch the dog now. Another…#lessonlearned.

*Tab and I were never the parents who had the kids in our bed. We wanted them to sleep and we wanted to get a good night’s sleep ourselves. We were HARD CORE about never starting that habit. But, guess where Champ sleeps? One guess. ;). At the foot of our bed in between us.

Now it’s your turn…please share a funny confession about your own pet owning life! I’d LOVE to hear!

XO

So funny and relatable! It’s amazing the things we do for our pets including feeding them people food to make sure they eat their own food!

I feel all of this. I was the exact same way. In fact, when I first met my now husband, I couldn’t even be with his dog alone. NEVER thought I’d own a dog or never understood how someone could let a dog on their furniture, let alone the bed. I’ve now broken every rule with our 13lb little man. He follows me everywhere and he is seriously the best thing to ever happen to us.

Those really made me laugh. I have never heard of outside dogs, that seems so cruel. is that a midwest or southern thing? You would get arrested here in the north if you did that!

Oh my gosh! I think it’s like a country thing? Think farm dogs but we didn’t have farm animals…just lots of land for them to roam.

I wasn’t sure I wanted a dog, but my husband really wanted one. He chose an Irish Terrier. He had the same coloring as Champ, but he felt rough like a goat. Not only did Tugger become our baby, that dog gave me the idea for my first children’s book, Tugger the Pretzel Pup. :o)

You truly never realize how many times a day you’ll say the phrase “go potty” until you’re a dog mom. I bet I say that phrase at least 50 times a day.
