When I did that poll back in December about blog topics, a lot of you asked me to talk about…
HOMEWORK!
You wanted to see how it looks at our house, how much my kiddos have, when we do it, etc. My plan was for my post today to be about just that, homework. But I decided yesterday, that I wanted to get your opinion first.
My plan is to post a couple HOMEWORK related polls on my Insta-Stories today. I’d love for you to hop over there and answer them quickly. {I’m “slaughteren” or you can find me here.}
THEN….when I post my HOMEWORK thoughts tomorrow, I’m gonna include your thoughts too. 🙂

I'll make sure to participate in the poll! I know this, I feel reallllllllllllllllly dumb when I have to read Carter's math questions over and over again before I can figure out what they are asking. Those multi-step ones always get me. 😉
You know my thoughts…
I love my son's homework. He gets a small packet at the beginning of the week (like 4 pages) that are just a refresher. He can either do them all the first night or we can spread them out depending on what our evening schedule looks like. Then he has to read for 20 minutes which we do anyway as our bedtime routine. Easy peasy!!!
As a former teacher, I understand the importance of reading at home and studying spelling words or for a test coming up. However, I do not think daily homework just to have homework is beneficial. Kids need to be kids! Let them go home and play and use their imagination and creativity! Let them spend time with their families, church activities, or sports. Let them play OUTSIDE and explore! Thankfully our new elementary principal doesn't believe in homework. We used to have daily homework packets! #ugh Now, we focus on reading and the occasional studying for a test but we make the best of the few hours we have each evening as a family! 🙂 Can't wait to read your post! HI Erika, I've been a kindergarten teacher for 30 years and get asked all the time why I don't give homework! I teach full day kindergarten and at 2:30 I want these sweet kids to go home and run and play and read! As the kids get older I agree that homework may be necessary (spelling tests), but should be no more than 15 minutes in elementary school. We are having some big debates at our school right now.
Homework gas been designed to make mothers crazy. That about sums it up for me. It's literally making me crazy bwcause,there's way too much of it and I feel like it's way more challenging than it should be (I'm 51,with a Master's Degree and sometimes I'm just stumped and can't help.)
It would be like working 8 hours at your job, going home and doing more work. A school day is more than enough time to learn, prepare, and grow. I am good with studying, but busy work, no mam.
Our district just revised our homework policy and reduced homework. When my oldest went to a private Quaker school they had no homework until 2nd grade. This all said, my oldest excels at school. She never needs to study and homework is just extra. My youngest needs homework, she needs to review things. I laughed in the comments that someone said it would be like working 8 hours and coming home and doing more work. I am a special ed teacher and I am part time but I still spending evenings curled up with my own school work. When I worked 8 hours I certainly did the same!!
As a 4th grade math teacher, the only homework I send home is what is not finished in class. If they use their time wisely, they have no homework, or it’s very minimal. I’d rather them finish the work in class, as I’m there to help if needed, and keep parents frustrations at a minimum.
As an old 5th grade math teacher it was vital that I knew what my students were getting or NOT getting! I always gave a small amount of problems for practice but allowed time during class to be completed. That way I could monitor their progress and help those that needed one on one time. Most always they finished before class ended! No homework on Friday was the gospel!
My daughter is a 6th grader this year and both her 5th grade year & 6th grade year now, are loaded with homework and projects. And I mean ….loaded.with.homework. She does homework all day and night everyday after school, even going to bed hours after bedtime, and definitely always brings homework for the weekend that was assigned on friday, plus sge has to use her weekends to do her projects because the weekend is the only time she has. So she basically gets no downtime to just hang out and be a kid. We had to give up Wednesday night church and her weekly cheer class because her hw load is just too much and she's so worn out. Sigh. My daughter loves loves loves school, her teachers, is super creative and an excellent student with her school work and grades, but she also wants and needs to be free and social and just not think and do hw everyday, all day. It's crazy. In her last 2 years of elementary she has this much work. What will middle school be like? She should be able to be more of a kid in elementary school, at least! Sigh…
