Show-and-Tell Tuesday

It’s time for another Show-and-Tell Tuesday with Andrea!  Today we’re sharing where we were, what we were doing, or just any details from September 11th, 2001.

I started my freshman year of college at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas, in August of 2011.  So on the morning of September 11th, I was still a newbie to college life.

I was living in this dorm, Arkansas Hall, and woke up to get ready for class like any other Tuesday.  I had a roommate who was still sleeping, so I didn’t turn on the television or anything like that before leaving for class.  I was heading out for biology and met up with some others walking to that class too.  One of the girls mentioned a terrorist attack.

I remember hearing different versions of the story all the way to class.  We learned a little more the closer we got and everyone just assumed class would be cancelled.

We finally arrived in Dr. Risch’s biology class.  Class was on, but our professor kind of explained everything he knew at the moment.  I remember him mentioning that we had some ROTC students in that particular class who had already left to go help.  I remember being scared.  I was barely eighteen (just had my birthday about a month before), so it was almost a relief to be in class with an adult who was explaining and discussing things with us.

When you’re eighteen years old, it’s kind of hard to really grasp the situation when you’re basing your thoughts on second-hand knowledge.  After class, I remember going back to my room and watching footage of what had happened that day and crying.  Crying for those people in the buildings.  Crying for those heroes on the plane.  Crying for the firefighters who knew they were sacrificing their lives and continuing to climb the stairs.  Crying for all those people who lost loved ones.  I was just sad for our country.

But I have to be honest…I was so proud of how our country rallied and came together.  Everyone was so proud to be an American.  Patriotism was at an all time high.  The American flag was flying everywhere, there were huge benefit concerts, lots of candlelight vigils, many people prayed for our country, and we were all donating blood.  The sense of unity was amazing.  It was a definitely a day most of us will never forget.

Thanks for stopping by today!  XOXO

I so agree, I was only 11 years old but I remember for a while after how nice everyone was to each other and how we all joined in with love and support for once. It's a shame we couldn't always be like that!

I was at AState as a freshman too, living in the same dorm! Crazy! I have a very similiar memory.
